Discover the thrilling world of backcountry skiing in our two-day introductory course! This course is for experienced resort skiers, looking to get away from the crowds and enjoy some time in the wilderness. This course focuses on skinning up, skiing down, and getting in as many turns as possible. Whereas our Introduction to Ski Touring course focuses on ski traversing from point A to point B, an epic spring activity in the Sierra.

We will go through the basics of backcountry skiing, teaching you the essential skills and techniques needed to ski safely. Highlights of our Two-Day Intro to Backcountry Ski Course Include:

  1. Gear and Equipment: Gain valuable insights into the equipment needed for Randonnee skiing, from skis and bindings to climbing skins and avalanche safety gear.
  2. Technique Training: Master the art of climbing and descending on skis, as well as efficient skinning and transitioning techniques.
  3. Safety First: Learn essential backcountry safety protocols, including avalanche awareness and rescue procedures, to ensure your adventures are as secure as they are thrilling.
  4. Stunning Locations: Immerse yourself in breathtaking alpine landscapes as you explore pristine backcountry terrain.

Prerequisites

Participants should be in excellent physical condition to fully enjoy this program. While this trip is specifically tailored for intermediate and advanced alpine skiers, prior experience in backcountry skiing is not a prerequisite. We highly recommend that you spend at least one night at moderate altitude (higher than 8,000 feet) just prior to the trip. Spending a night or two in Mammoth is perfect. Please refer to our Fitness, Training and Acclimatization Tips on the “Resources Tab” for more information on preparing for your trip.

Gear

SMC is happy to provide avalanche rescue gear, but we do not rent ski equipment. For this we recommend Mammoth Mountaineering Supply in Mammoth Lakes. Please see our Equipment List” on the “Resources Tab” for a full gear list.
