The heart of lead climbing is solid protection and anchoring skills. It is vastly different from following. You are in charge of protecting yourself, route finding and belaying your follower. This course will give you the skills to climb single pitch traditional and sport climbs.
Traditional Lead Climbing Course Curriculum
Skills covered during the course include:
- Active and passive gear placements
- Anchor construction
- Lead climbing and belaying considerations and strategies
- Rope management
- Anchor station management
- Anchor cleaning
Course Location
We are based in Bishop, California. We vary the location depending upon the season and will be the Mammoth Lakes or Bishop areas. We will confirm the exact location prior to the start of the program.
Instructors
Our guides are American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) trained and certified. This means you can expect the highest level of climbing and safety knowledge, along with professionalism and strong instructional skills.
Prerequisites
You should be comfortable following multi-pitch rock climbing, removing traditional climbing gear, and cleaning anchors.
Day 1
We will work with gear and equipment, placing and removing it in a “laboratory” setting (on the ground) so that you can experiment. We explore ways of connecting placements together to create anchors. We also work on belay stance management and increasing efficiency. Participants will practice leading with various backups involved including a top rope and/or pre-placed gear.
Day 2
Today we put it all together with you on the front end of the rope leading. For this segment we generally have backup protection systems in place so that you can focus on the mechanics with a relaxed mind. We use a backup rope or pre-placed protection and often have you climbing the same route several times, looking at it in different ways.
Rental Equipment
We have rental equipment available at checkout.
Reviews
Amanda, Intro to Mountaineering and more
“I have done a few trainings with Sierra Mountain Center and I highly recommend them as a training source for all your adventures. Last year I did their river crossing and a mountaineering basic course. I recently completed the mini mountain camp and I had the best time. I learned so much! My guide was Anouk and she was so badass. She taught me so much! I had a blast and I can’t wait to take my mountaineering to the next level. I will definitely use SMC as a future training source.”

Fred, Mt. Whitney East Buttress
“Used SMC for a climb of the East Buttress of Mt. Whitney June 17, 2024. Great experience all the way around. Dave was my guide and I highly recommend choosing them for your Sierra adventure!”
Jason, Palisade Traverse
“What a fantastic trip put together for us by the Sierra Mountain Center. From the start Emma was fantastic and professional in the coordination efforts for our Palisade Traverse trip. My son and I had a 1:1 guide ratio and the guides, Dave Stimson and Tyler Logan, were exceptional. Exceptional in their knowledge of the route, their efficiency with rope craft and their trailside manner – despite the exhausting climb we had such a fun time. We are already planning next year’s outing with SMC.”
