Description
This course is meant to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor climbing, providing the knowledge and skills necessary to feel safe and comfortable in a new environment. We will cover climbing and movement techniques while learning to build and clean bolt anchors safely and efficiently.
Instructors
Our guides are American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) trained and certified so you can expect the highest level of climbing and safety knowledge, combined with solid instructional skills and professionalism.
Prerequisites
Previous indoor climbing and a basic knowledge of belaying and climbing techniques. You should feel comfortable climbing 5.9 in the gym.
Location
We offer a variety of nearby options around Bishop and Mammoth Lakes that can be tailored to suit the season and weather conditions. We will inform you of our finalized location before your course.
Acclimatization & Physical Training
For proper acclimatization, we suggest spending at least one night at a moderate altitude, higher than 8,000 feet, just prior to the start of the journey. See our detailed tips on acclimatizing and physical training in the “Resources” tab.
Topics covered will include:
- Footwork.
- Putting a route together.
- Visualization.
- Mental and physical training for sport climbing.
- Equipment selection.
- Anchor construction and its safe usage.
- And, of course, as much climbing as you are able to handle.
Location Options Include:
The Owens River Gorge. With over 600 routes, this area has a tremendous concentration of climbs on andesite and welded tuff rock types. Routes here start at 5.6 and, in contrast to many other sport areas, the greatest concentration of climbs is at the 5.10 level. The Gorge is at low elevation and can be a hot place during summer.
Rock Creek. At 8,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada, the Rock Creek area offers wonderful granite bolted routes. The climbing is varied, requiring a repertoire of skills and techniques. Surrounded by aspen groves, this is a beautiful locale during the month of fall. Routes here start at 5.9 and go upwards.
Clark Canyon. Situated in the Jeffrey Pine forest east of Mammoth, this offers short, steep climbs on pocketed tuff and some cracks. It is a lot cooler than the low elevation crags in mid-summer. There is range of climbs from 5.6 upwards.

Reviews
Amanda, Intro to Mountaineering and more
“I have done a few trainings with Sierra Mountain Center and I highly recommend them as a training source for all your adventures. Last year I did their river crossing and a mountaineering basic course. I recently completed the mini mountain camp and I had the best time. I learned so much! My guide was Anouk and she was so badass. She taught me so much! I had a blast and I can’t wait to take my mountaineering to the next level. I will definitely use SMC as a future training source.”

Fred, Mt. Whitney East Buttress
“Used SMC for a climb of the East Buttress of Mt. Whitney June 17, 2024. Great experience all the way around. Dave was my guide and I highly recommend choosing them for your Sierra adventure!”
Jason, Palisade Traverse
“What a fantastic trip put together for us by the Sierra Mountain Center. From the start Emma was fantastic and professional in the coordination efforts for our Palisade Traverse trip. My son and I had a 1:1 guide ratio and the guides, Dave Stimson and Tyler Logan, were exceptional. Exceptional in their knowledge of the route, their efficiency with rope craft and their trailside manner – despite the exhausting climb we had such a fun time. We are already planning next year’s outing with SMC.”
