Blue Lake Basecamp
$895
Dates
- 2025: June 13-15 | June 27-29 | July 4-6 | July 18-20 | August 8-10 | September 5-7
Blue Lake is a beautiful location to set up a basecamp and explore the area. This trip leaves from Sabrina Lake and climb up to Blue Lake and the surrounding basin. You could spend your time lounging by the lake or take a day hike from camp on the second day. Lakes abound in this basin, with some interesting names – Hungry Packer, Midnight, Baboon, Donkey, Moonlight, and Topsy Turvy are just some of them!
Whether you want to have a mellow weekend out or try to see each and every lake possible, this might be the trip for you, your family, or a group of friends. It can also be a great way to try out backpacking without having to travel too far. We are open to also adding one or more days if you want more time to relax and/or explore.
Inclusions
Price includes guiding, permits, group camping gear, tents, kitchen gear, and all meals. Our meals are healthy and prepared by your guide before the trip. We use good quality dehydrated ingredients to make a variety of delicious, protein-packed meals. We rarely serve pre-packaged dehydrated meals.
Prerequisites
No prior backpacking experience required, but you should be in good physical shape.
Acclimatization & Physical Training
For proper acclimatization, we suggest spending at least one night at a moderate altitude, higher than 8,000 feet, just prior to the start of the journey. See our detailed tips on acclimatizing and physical training in the “Resources” tab.
Porters
If you’d like to make the hike in and out even simpler, consider hiring porters to carry some of your gear. They would meet you on the first day and take some of your equipment, group gear, and other items. This will bring your backpack weight down to more of a day pack weight. They’ll hike up with the group to your camp at Blue Lake. Porters can also be hired for the hike out. Contact us to learn more and add porters to your reservation!
Day 1
We will meet in Bishop at our office to go through a gear check and split up any group gear. Once ready, we will caravan to the trailhead at Sabrina Lake. The trail starts out meandering just above the shores of Sabrina Lake. Towards the far end of the lake, the climbing begins gently but steadily. There are lots of great places to stop and enjoy the view along the way. Before you know it, you have arrived at Blue Lake and can get camp set up.
Day 2
Options for the day abound! If you want to relax at camp, go for a swim, and spend the day by Blue Lake, it’s a great spot to do just that. If you’re looking to get out an another hike, there are many places to go. Consider going for 1-2 miles to check out a nearby lake or two, or gather a day pack and head out for 5-10 miles of hiking around the basin to one or more other lakes in the area. You’ll return to base camp for the evening.
Day 3
We will have breakfast and pack up camp, then hike back down to the cars. We plan to get to the trailhead by lunchtime.
Distances and Elevations
Day 1: Trailhead to Blue Lake, 3 miles, 1,400 feet of gain
Day 2: Variable – optional 1-8 miles with up to 1,500-2,000 feet of gain
Day 3: Blue Lake to Trailhead, 3 miles, 1,400 feet of down
Interested in extending your trip?
We can add another day to the trip if you’re interested! This can give you more time to relax, explore, or both. Contact us for pricing for an additional day.

Paul, Evolution Loop Backpacking Trip
“I went on the 6-day Evolution Loop backpacking trip. I had the time of my life. The scenery was stunningly beautiful. Our guides kept us safe, prepared excellent meals, and were very knowledgeable about the area. They were friendly and kept us informed about what to expect each day. I only wish the trip lasted more days. I’ll be back for more.”
