Day 1: Intro to Backcountry Skiing & Boarding
We meet at 8 am in Mammoth Lakes (exact location sent two weeks prior). After a brief introduction and gear check, we caravan to a nearby trailhead for our instructional ski tour. This day focuses on acclimating to backcountry travel, understanding essential equipment, and learning foundational skills for safe navigation and technique.
Day 2: Avalanche Education
We meet at a predetermined field location to examine real avalanche paths and discuss potential travel routes. In the afternoon, we dive deeper into snowpack analysis, covering site selection, snowpack metamorphism, identifying weak layers, and performing stability tests to assess avalanche risk.
Day 3: Avalanche Education
We put it all together with a tour that includes practical applications of bonding tests, route-finding, and beacon searches. This hands-on session reinforces the skills learned over the past two days. We aim to wrap up the field portion by 3-4 pm.
Online Learning (6 Hours)
Before your in-field session, you will complete an online course provided by AIARE. Access to the online learning materials is available as soon as you register, allowing you to prepare at your own pace and come ready for an engaging, hands-on experience.
Zoom Class (2 Hours)
Join us for a live Zoom session from 6-8 p.m. on the Wednesday evening before your field course. During this session, you’ll meet your instructors, review mapping software, explore local forecasting resources, practice tour planning, and discuss current conditions. If you can’t attend, we’ll provide a recording for you.
For the December 28-29 course, the Zoom session will be on Thursday, December 26.
Preparing for your course
Get ready for a rewarding experience with a mild level of physical exertion. During the course, we’ll spend several hours outdoors in cold, windy, or potentially inclement weather. To stay comfortable and safe, make sure to bring:
- Plenty of extra layers to adapt to changing conditions.
- Food (you’ll need to provide your own meals and snacks).
- Water for each day.
To help your body adjust to the altitude, we recommend spending at least one night at a moderate elevation (above 8,000 feet) before the course begins. For detailed tips on acclimatization and physical training, check out the “Resources” tab on our website.

Reviews
Eli, AIARE I
“Sierra Mountain Center is the fantastic resource to have on the Eastern Sierra! I just took my AIARE 1 course with them and they were stellar and professional through and through. The owner Emma is so kind and helpful and will make sure you have a successful experience with this company. Guides Tyler and Mike were incredibly knowledgeable and patient and led a great course. I couldn’t recommend SMC more for any of your guiding needs on the east side.”
Michael, AIARE II
“Hey all! I recently took AIARE 2 with SP Parker and I have to admit it was fantastic! He showed so much passion for his craft and “patience” with us. It truly showed in the 3 days we spent together that he cares about what he does. He is so knowledgeable about snow science and in particular Eastern Sierra snow that I highly recommend participating in his course if you’re a frequenter of this magical mountain range. Can’t thank you enough and will most surely use the lessons learned in this course to be a more safe and conscious backcountry traveler.”
