Getting to the Eastern Sierra
Sierra Mountain Center is based in the beautiful and rugged Eastern Sierra, a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. While the remoteness adds to its charm, it also means that getting here requires a bit of planning. The Eastern Sierra is often described as being “in the middle of nowhere,” but with a little preparation, the journey can be part of the adventure!
Driving
Bishop is about a five-hour drive from both Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and about three and a half hours from Reno. If you’re coming from the Bay Area, it’ll take around five or six hours, but it can be much longer if Tioga and Sonora Passes are closed.
No matter where you’re coming from, the drive to Bishop is an experience in itself, with incredible scenery all the way. We recommend taking your time and enjoying the journey!
Flying
While there isn’t a full-time airport in our immediate area, there are several airports you can fly into that are within driving distance:
Eastern Sierra Regional Airport (BIH): Located in Bishop, offering limited seasonal flights.
- Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS): This is usually the cheapest option. Rent a car and drive to Bishop in about 5 hours.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO): The largest nearby airport, located about 3.5 hours north of Bishop. Reno offers numerous flight options, and rental cars are readily available for the drive down US-395.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): For those flying in from further afield, LAX is a major hub about 5 hours from Bishop. It’s ideal for international travelers or anyone needing a wider range of flight options.
Airport Shuttles
The only airport with public transportation directly to Bishop is Reno-Tahoe International. Eastern Sierra Transit offers a daily bus service between Reno and Bishop, making it a convenient option if you prefer not to drive.
Rental Cars & Rideshares
Once you arrive at a nearby airport, renting a car is the easiest way to explore the region and get to Sierra Mountain Center. Be aware that rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are limited in the Eastern Sierra, especially in more remote areas, so plan accordingly.
Scenic Views, No Matter How you Arrive
No matter how you choose to travel, the journey to the Eastern Sierra is part of the experience. With dramatic mountain ranges, high deserts, and serene valleys along the way, you’ll start your adventure before you even arrive. We’re excited to help you explore one of the most unique and beautiful regions in the country!
