FAQ's
At SMC, we work hard to answer all of your questions as you prepare for a trip. We have compiled some of our most commonly asked questions below. You can always reach out to us by phone or email with other inquiries!
What gear do I need to bring for my trip?
We have specific gear lists on each trip page on our website. It will cover clothing, sleeping gear, other essentials, and anything else you might need. Please contact us if you have specific questions about any of your gear or items on our list and keep an eye on the weather as your trip date approaches.
What will the meals be like on my trip?
Delicious, tasty, and nutritious. Our guides work to prepare meals that meet your allergies and dietary restrictions. They rarely pack pre-packaged meals (except on more technical trips where making a “gourmet” meal is too complex).
They bring fresh ingredients when possible, and have a variety of meals so you likely won’t eat the same meal twice (except maybe on longer trips of 5 or more days).
How heavy will my backpack be?
This is a common question, and will vary depending on the length of your trip, type of trip, and weight of your personal gear. Your pack will probably be around 25 to 35 pounds total, including group gear and food that SMC provides. With technical trips that require ropes, harness, climbing gear, and other specific items, your pack may be on the heavier side.
If you can get your personal gear to be around 15-20 pounds, that should set you up well. If you can get it to be less than that, we support you!
The pack weight concerns me - should I get a porter?
We offer porters for almost any of our trips. A porter can carry some of your gear on the hike in and/or out. This can make your first and last days a little easier, conserving your energy for the summit day. Porters can carry up to 40lbs. The cost per day per porter is $300. When booking your trip, we can add this option if you’d like.
You might also look into our mule supported trips, where mules carry the majority of your gear while you carry a day pack every day.
Am I old enough?
If you are 16 years or older, you could join any of our trips. If you are under 16, we ask a parent or guardian to join on the trip. We are happy to talk with you if your child is much younger than that about which trips might be appropriate.
Am I young enough?
We have a large number of individuals over 55 years of age on our trips. A large majority of these individuals participate in a backpacking or mule-supported trips, with a smaller number doing rock/alpine climbing and mountaineering.
Summer 2024 Stats – 45% of all guests were over 55:
- 30% of alpine climbing/mountaineering guests are over 55
- 50% of backpacking guests are over 55
- 80% of mule supported trip guests are over 55
What happens if there are not enough signups for my group trip?
There are a few options if your group trip does not have enough signups to run as a group. You can check these options out on our Deposit and Cancellation Policy page under Guide to Guest Ratio.
How do I get to Bishop/Mammoth?
We have a dedicated page with details for traveling to the area – check it out here!
Should I tip my guide?
Your guides (and packers) work hard to provide you with an excellent mountain experience. As with other service industries, 10 to 20 percent of your total trip cost is often a good place to start for a tip. You can always adjust that amount based on your experience. Make sure to consider the guides, packers, and porters, depending on your trip.
Cash is preferred, but you can also ask the guide(s) for their venmo or paypal.
Should I get trip insurance?
We would strongly recommend purchasing trip insurance and have details on our Deposits and Cancellation Policy page. Anything can happen at any time and trip insurance can cover all parts of your trip, from the SMC trip to lodging, airfare, etc. As a small business, we work hard to provide excellent experiences while also paying our guides and covering our costs, and our cancellation policy does our best to reflect that.
